This Study Group will address the curricular requirement to foster media literacy in the English L2 classroom. We will examine the nature of media literacy, reflect on examples of how to teach media literacy and critically discuss how media literacy is conceptualised in secondary school curricula for different school-types in the subcategory “Bildung für die digitale Welt und Medienbildung”.
To consider how to promote media literacy in the classroom, we will work with social media phenomena such as meme culture, pop culture (including pop music), TikTok videos, etc. We will also cover the basics of lesson planning, and the participants will be asked to develop lessons to promote the competency of media literacy on the basis of one of the curricula in order to gain credit for the Study Group.
