The nineteenth century not only saw Britain’s rise to one of the most powerful colonial empires that ever spanned the globe, but it also witnessed the development of the novel into the dominant literary genre of its time. This block seminar will provide an introduction to some of the most important developments in nineteenth century British fiction in the context of major social, cultural, and political developments. For this purpose, we will study a selection of texts by Austen, Dickens, Gaskell, Wells, Kipling, and others.
Since the program of the block seminar will be tightly packed, the reading has to be done prior to the first session of the seminar (date). A list with primary and secondary texts will be made available in preliminary meeting and posted on the Stud.IP. Those texts have to be read prior to the first session of the seminar. A quiz with basic questions on the assigned reading has to be expected.
If you have any questions about the block seminar, please feel free to contact me.
