This course will analyze the writings that form the beginnings of feminist theorizing in Britain, notably Mary Wollstonecraft: A Vindication of the Rights of Woman, William Thompson; Anna Wheeler: Appeal of One Half the Human Race …, and John Stuart Mill: The Subjection of Woman. Apart from assessing the ideas on women’s condition put forward in each of them, the texts will be placed in their historical context as well as related to the lives of their respective author(s).
You are strongly advised to familiarize yourselves with the primary texts during the summer vacation. All further reading material will be made available at the start of the semester.
