990034 PEP WORKSHOP How to get published (WS) (WiSe 2025/2026)

Contents, comment

Date
13.10. - 24.10.2025 | asynchronous (entirely self-organized (independent start and self-conducted by using provided material), except for a 45-minute individual session with Mr. Froeyman. Workload 10-15 hours.)

Content
The aim of this workshop is to guide young researchers through all stages of the publication process, allowing them to plan their writing and publication methods, and ultimately their career, with much greater care.

Firstly, academic publications have become a vital part of scientific evaluation. They are no longer merely a means of communication, but are increasingly used as a criterion for quality control. As a result, publishing has become a vital part of scientific research: to be a (good) scientist is to publish. Secondly, academic careers are short and precarious: the majority of doctoral researchers move on to a different kind of employment, which means they have less time to get their results into the open. The result of this twofold situation is the following: publishing has become vitally important, but people have less and less time to learn how to do it.

This workshop is meant to help them overcome this problem. It offers a guide through all principles of publication, using a broad variety of tools and principles which can be used to take control of one’s publication strategies. This allows doctoral researchers to take off on a flying start: knowledge and skills that would otherwise be the result of a long process of trial and error are now ready-at-hand for them to use at the very beginnings of their academic career.

The course takes place during a period of two weeks. During these two weeks, participants will watch a series of videos that explain the theory of the course and complete assignments that put that theory into practice. Feedback will occur mostly on an individual basis, but participants will be able to see each other’s assignments and feedback. Participants will be able to pose questions on a dedicated online forum.

Structure
The seminar is designed as an entirely self-paced online course, allowing nearly all required coursework to be completed at participants' convenience. The only fixed component is a 45-minute individual session, for which about 30 available time slots can be chosen. One of these slots should be selected early, preferably within the first few days of the course.

Before the workshop, a link to a Google Drive folder containing all videos, tasks, and materials will be provided by Mr. Froeyman. No fixed times for participants to be online are required. Individual appointments for feedback or similar matters can be arranged with the trainer. The total workload is estimated to be 10-15 hours over the two-week period.
