In this class we will take a look at bilingualism as a linguistic and social phenomenon. Our linguistic focus lies on the acquisition process as well as cognitive benefits and challenges, while form a social point of view we'll look at the different approaches to/methods of bilingual language acquisition - both individual and societal - as well as the way American institutions of education (primary, secondary, and tertiary) make use of and implement bilingual programs (transitional bilingual education, dual bilingual education, immersion).
