In this student-led study group we will be analysing the speeches of various presidents of the U.S.A. with regard to content, stylistic devices and historical and political context. We will work with the texts of speeches but also watch or listen to selected audio and video material and observe how the presidents' messages are conveyed with reference to a range of paralinguistic and non-verbal cues.
Not only will we gain insight into the impacts of stylistic devices and the performative elements of political speech-making, but through this lens, we will examine the political and historical contexts in which the speeches were delivered.
Over the course of the block seminar we will be working as a single group, as well as individually and in smaller groups.

The binding module descriptions contain further information, including specifications on the "types of assignments" students need to complete. In cases where a module description mentions more than one kind of assignment, the respective member of the teaching staff will decide which task(s) they assign the students.
