Wales, whose subjection to England was completed by Henry VIII, used to be thought of, at least by the English, as just an appendage of England. 'England and Wales' has formed a composite administrative unit in a way that was never true for either Scotland or Ireland. Today, by contrast, Wales boasts its own national assembly with at least some powers of self-determination.
This seminar will chart the course of an increasing number of Welsh developing an awareness of themselves as a nation quite apart from the English, paying particular attention to developments taking place in the 19th and 20th centuries.
