Die Veranstaltung versteht sich als Orientierungshilfe für Neueinsteiger in das Studium der Rechtswissenschaft. Einfach ausgedrückt geht es um die Frage: "Worum geht es bei diesem Studium überhaupt?". Wer hierauf antworten will, der stößt schnell auf weitere Fragen: "Was ist eigentlich Recht?", "Was ist Rechtswissenschaft?", "Wozu ist Rechtswissenschaft überhaupt gut?" oder "Wie betreibt man Rechtswissenschaft?". In der Vorlesung sollen Antworten auf solche Fragen nach Gegenstand, Funktionen und Methoden von Recht und Rechtswissenschaft erarbeitet und vorgestellt werden.
