Das Seminar widmet sich der historischen und kulturgeschichtlichen Interpretation der homerischen Odyssee, konzentriert auf Bücher 5-13, die von dem Aufenthalt des Helden bei den Phäaken und seinen Irrfahrtenerzählungen handeln. Diese werden als Ausdruck einer Zeit verstanden, die im Aufbruch an ferne Küsten und in fremde Meere begriffen ist und das Erlebte mit Hilfe alter und zeitgenössischer Motive zu verarbeiten sucht. Grundlage ist ein deutsche Übersetzung des Epos, bevorzugt die von A. Weiher bei DTV.
