230426 Experimental Analysis of Spontaneous Speech Phenomena (S) (SoSe 2025)

Contents, comment

Spontaneous speech differs from speech spoken in the lab. It is notoriously difficult to study spontaneous speech phenomena in controlled environments. In this course we will reflect experimental methods that may address this problem.
The aim of this course is that every participant devises and conducts a small-scale experiment on a spontaneous speech phenomenon of their choice. Depending on group size, this can also be joint work.
A good example for phenomena that could be investigated would be hesitations/disfluencies. Other phenomena, such as laughter or backchannels are also suitable, as well as anything that the participants bring to class.
Please check the literature section for one introductory work on hesitations (Lickley 2015) and one example of an experimental setting (Betz et al. 2023).
