Die Weimarer Republik steckt den zeitlichen Rahmen ab für diese Darstellung der Theorie und Geschichte des Romans. Für diese Textsorte erwies sich diese kurze, politisch und sozial unruhige Phase als äußerst produktiv. Es erschien eine ganze Reihe "großer" Romane von Franz Kafka, Thomas Mann, Alfred Döblin, Robert Musil, Hermann Broch, Hermann Hesse, zugleich erregten ausgesprochene Best- und Longseller von Erich-Maria Remarque, Vicki Baum, Hans Fallada, Erich Kästner die Aufmerksamkeit des Publikums. Dennoch war von einer "Krise" des Erzählens und des Romans die Rede. Im Kontext zeitgenössischer Produktions- und Rezeptionsbedingungen und im Zusammenhang mit den theoretischen Auseinandersetzungen sollen die wichtigsten Romane vorgestellt und analysiert werden.
