Das Seminar beschäftigt sich mit zwei Kerngebieten der Linguistik: der Phonetik/Phonologie und der Morphologie. Im ersten Teil des Seminars werden die Grundlagen zur Phonetik und Phonologie erarbeitet, wobei eine Abgrenzung zwischen Phonetik und Phonologie erforderlich ist. Während die Phonetik mit den physikalisch messbaren Eigenschaften von Lauten und deren physiologischen Grundlagen zu tun hat, beschäftigt sich die Phonologie mit den Lauten als bedeutungsunterscheidenden Einheiten und ihrer Beziehung zueinander in einem Sprachsystem. Der zweite Teil des Seminars befasst sich mit der Morphologie, deren Gegenstand die Wortstruktur ist. Dieser Teil des Seminars führt in Grundtermini der Morphologie ein und macht mit der Analyse der morphologischen Struktur des Deutschen vertraut. Die Abgrenzung von Flexion und Wortbildung und die einzelnen Wortbildungsarten des Deutschen (u.a. Derivation, Komposition und Konversion) bilden weitere Schwerpunkte dieses Seminarteils.
