The course will attempt to provide you with a survey of some of the decisive developments in the cultural, political, social, religious and institutional history of England from the French Revolution to the 21st century, and to supply contexts for your literary and linguistic studies. If you wish to attend this course, please familiarise yourself with the general outline of the history of England during the summer break. The course reader will contain historical documents from each period, which we will discuss in class. A careful reading of these texts is essential: to make sense of them, you will need a general context.
