This course aims to guide students in how to pedagogically balance their specific academic content and language for teaching or presenting purposes. As English grows into the language of communication in many academic fields internationally, expectations increase in regards to how academic concepts are communicated in English at conferences, in workshops, or during academic discussions. In addition, an increasing number of instructors in higher education teach their course material in English as it is the predominant language of discourse in their field. This development has caused instructors to consider how to adequately prepare and present their research and course for other nonnative speakers of English.
In this course, we will investigate how the principles of Content and Language Integrated Learning (CLIL) can be applied to the process of teaching and presenting in English in academic contexts. We will discuss the different levels necessary when planning in CLIL contexts: topic, objectives, language, processing, activation, communication, and evaluation. These will be applied to the different areas of interest of the participants in the course. The framework for planning can then be applied in practice in the project work that follows this course in the module.
