Das Seminar thematisiert den Epochenumbruch „um 1900“ (Naturalismus, Fin-de-siècle, Expressionismus) am Beispiel dramatischer Texte. Es wird zunächst um Grundbegriffe der Dramenanalyse gehen (Bauformen des Dramas, Konfiguration, Charakterisierung, Handlungsbegriff, Zeitstruktur). Im Mittelpunkt stehen aber vergleichende und kontrastierende Lektüren ausgewählter Dramen aus der Zeit von 1892 bis 1920: Gerhard Hauptmanns „Der Biberpelz“ (1892/3) und „Die Weber“ (1893), Arthur Schnitzlers, „Anatol“ (1893) und „Reigen“ (1896/7), Carl Sternheims „Die Hose“ (1911) und Ernst Tollers „Masse-Mensch“ (1920).
Ziel der textnahen Lektüren ist es, die Vielfältigkeit des Epochenschemas um 1900 am Beispiel der Brüche und Kontinuitäten der dramatischen Spielformen und vor dem Hintergrund ihrer historisch-politisch-kulturellen Krisen und Kontexte zu erarbeiten.
