In this seminar, we will discuss the connection between language and identity in the British Isles. We will talk about current political developments, most prominently the upcoming vote in Scotland, but also about historical events, for example the Irish independence movement. Such political developments have had important consequences for the status and function of English and the other languages spoken in the British Isles. The cultural and linguistic results of immigration will also be a topic of this class.
