What is the lexicon? What does the lexicon have to do with syntax and morphology? Where is the difference between sense and meaning? What are sense and meaning after all? Can a word have more than one meaning? Are these meanings always related to each other? What about the meanings of different words? Can different words have the same meaning? How does the lexicon change and what word formation processes are there? What role does the lexicon play in language acquisition? What is the difference between a thesaurus, a bilingual, and a monolingual dictionary?
These and other questions will be discussed in this course and provide students with basic knowledge that is relevant for variational linguistics, as well as morphological research and studies in language acquisition.
The course may be taken as a substitute for How to Make a Dictionary (older BA and M.Ed. programs).
