230036 Hot Topics in Phonetics and Phonology: Theory and Modeling (S) (WiSe 2014/2015)

Contents, comment

Formal and computational models have become an important methodological tool in contemporary phonetics and phonology research, as they ask for conciseness and consequently enable us to implement and test their predictions. The class will focus on recent and/or highly influential theories and models in phonetics and phonology covering the most important areas, namely

- perception (exemplar theory, new approaches to motor theory (perception-action coupling), ...)

- production (task-dynamics, embodied task dynamics, stochastic OT)

- theories and models of prosodic processing

- language contact and phonological variation

The course will mainly consist of weekly reading assignments and oral presentations as well as group discussions of the papers read in class.
