Through exercises, discussions and writing assignments students in this course will learn the answers to the following questions:
1) what is “good” English writing and how does one write a “good” English-language sentence, paragraph, summary or argument?
2) what techniques and skills can we develop to consistently improve our writing throughout our careers?
3) what are the differences between academic German and English writing?
The course content and objectives include:
- writing and grammar exercises (in-class and as homework)
- group evaluation and analysis of writing examples (in-class and as homework)
- read and discuss short stories and articles (as homework and in-class)
- learn and use the analytic and organizational techniques common to English academic traditions
- develop writing and analytic skills that will be useful after the course
Students will produce a portfolio of three final projects: Article Summary, Short Story Analysis, Personal Choice Project, each of which will include several re-writes as well as the final versions. The course’s writing exercises, writing projects and their assessments will typically be posted and evaluated on Moodle.
