This course covers a range of topics that bear on the question of how much morality should require of us. We shall discuss how the notion of moral demands should be understood. Is it best understood in terms of costs or sacrifices to one's well-being, difficulty, or something else? Is there an important difference between moral confinement and demandingness? We shall also distinguish and discuss different forms of overdemandingness objections and possible responses to these objections. We shall also consider whether problems with excessive demands are specific to consequentialist theories (e.g., utilitarianism) or whether they generalise to other moral theories such as Kantianism, contractualism, and other forms of non-consequentialism.
