300638 Contemporary African Migrations to Germany (30-M25 Transnationalisierung und Migration) (S) (WiSe 2025/2026)

Contents, comment

The course aims at examining the reasons responsible for movements, mobilities, and migrations with a focus on West Africans to Germany. Factors that serve as disincentives to move as well those attractive from Germany will be examined. The various means especially young Africans attempt to use to travel abroad will also be looked at. The course seeks to broaden students’ understanding of migration processes and aims at empowering students to critically reflect on these and be able to identify how the same, similar, or different factors apply to other contexts. Phenomena such as deskilling which is generally associated with movements and migrations will also be discussed. In addition, some challenges African immigrants encounter after arriving at the destination area will be highlighted. The course will focus more on West African migrations to Germany and especially from 1990
