In this class, we will read contemporary Arab-American literatures and explore how identities are constructed and what it means to be Arab-American(s) as defined by the novels, social media and other cultural texts. We are going to read history, religion, race, gender, ethnicity, sexuality, class as signifiers, struggles and/or liberatory sociocultural constructs and learn about Arab-American experiences.
During the preparatory session in July, we will finalize our reading list to which you are more than welcome to contribute to with novels, short stories, poems, games, tv-shows and/or films that we can explore, too.
The reading list contains the following novels which must be read before class:
Laila Lalami -- Conditional Citizens (2021)
Susan Abulhawa -- Against the Loveless World (2021)
Ghassan Zeineddine -- Dearborn (2023)
Hala Alyan -- Salt Houses (2017)
Etaf Rum -- A Woman is No Man (2019)

The binding module descriptions contain further information, including specifications on the "types of assignments" students need to complete. In cases where a module description mentions more than one kind of assignment, the respective member of the teaching staff will decide which task(s) they assign the students.
