239929 The Plantagenets: The Language of Late Medieval England (S) (SoSe 2014)

Contents, comment

The topic of this class is late Middle English. We will also look at the periods before (Old English) and after (Early Modern English), but the main focus is Middle English. Apart from studying the structural properties of Middle English, issues like language contact and change and questions of language and identity will be covered.
A substantial part of this class will be based on research projects that can be conducted individually or in small groups. These projects can be chosen according to students’ own interests from a variety of linguistic areas, e.g. sociolinguistics, syntax, phonology, or morphology.
Students are strongly encouraged to also attend Dr. Angela Stock’s class on the literature and culture of Plantagenet England.
