Der christliche Autor Cyprian, 249-258 Bischof von Karthago, verfasste vor dem Hintergrund anhaltender Christenverfolgung und ungelöster innerkirchlicher Konflikte zahlreiche Briefe und mehrere Traktate. Im Rahmen der Lektüreübung werden wir zwei Briefe lesen:
In der kurzen Schrift Ad Donatum wendet sich Cyprian an einen Adressaten, der möglicherweise kurz vor oder kurz nach der Taufe steht; ihm erläutert der Verfasser die Motive seiner eigenen Bekehrung; dabei setzt er sich intensiv mit der paganen Tradition auseinander. In Ad Demetrianum wendet sich Cyprian an einen unerbittlichen Christenverfolger und versucht nicht zuletzt, ihn über die heilsgeschichtliche Dimension des Christentums aufzuklären.
