What is science and how does it work? The picture of “the scientific method” that most of us learn in school is a simplified version of scientific practice. In this course, you will acquire a deeper understanding of the concepts, methods and difficulties that make up real-life scientific research. Specific topics include: What are the goals of science? How do scientists attain knowledge about the world? What is the status of scientific knowledge? We will meet weekly for the duration of the semester. In the first three parts of the course, each meeting will consist of a lecture, followed by class discussion. In the fourth part of the course, we will take an in-depth look at the use and role of experiments and models in scientific practice, focusing on the question of whether one of these sources of knowledge is epistemically superior to the other.
