Thomas M. Scanlon sagte in einem Interview mit Yascha Mounk (2022): “If you look at a lot of the controversies that are out there today having to do with global warming, Black Lives Matter, wearing masks and getting vaccinated—there's a lot of passion there. And it seems to me we have one party that is basically being very successful by taking Gauthier’s remark as their party platform: We don't owe anybody anything.”
In seinem Buch "What we owe to each other" (1998) entwickelt und verteidigt Thomas Scanlon seine Theorie des moralischen Kontraktualismus, derzufolge Handlungen genau dann moralisch falsch sind, wenn sie von Handlungsprinzipien verboten werden, die niemand vernünftigerweise als Grundlage für eine informierte, freiwillige Übereinkunft ablehnen könnte. Im Verlaufe des Buches werden eine Vielzahl wichtiger moralphilosophischer Themen behandelt wie das Verhältnis zwischen Gründen und Werten, Verantwortung und die Rechtfertigbarkeit moralischer Urteile. Scanlon hat mit seinem Buch viele ethische Debatten angestoßen und beeinflusst. In dem Seminar wollen wir "What we owe to each other" sowie ggf. einige weitere Texte lesen, die sich unmittelbar mit Scanlons Positionen auseinandersetzen. Die Bereitschaft zur Lektüre englischsprachiger Texte wird vorausgesetzt.
