This seminar introduces participants to the approaches introduced by the so-called Law and Literature movement with a focus on the interconnections between law and literature. This field, first, takes into account the growing doubt about law as an isolated and 'neutral' source of value and meaning relating it to a larger cultural or social context. The field, second, elaborates on the growing focus on the mutability of meaning in all texts, whether literary or legal. Work in the field comprises two complementary perspectives: Law in literature (understanding issues as they are explored in literary texts) and law as literature (understanding legal texts with literary interpretation, analysis, and critique).
