Focused on the structure, dynamics, and interpretation of modernist works, this seminar explores the conceptualization and narrativization of melancholia & The Machine (see for instance: http://xroads.virginia.edu/~MA01/Lisle/30home/modern/modern.html ; https://academic.oup.com/edinburgh-scholarship-online/book/37968 https://academic.oup.com/book/9916). We will discuss modernist movements and works, and the key techniques and theories for their critical interpretation.
For those of you who would like a head start on the reading material, our discussion begins with Virginia Woolf´s Mrs Dalloway, followed by discussions on Aldous Huxley´s Brave New World and D.H. Lawrence´s Lady Chatterley´s Lover.
