In this seminar, students will actively engage in learning the in-depth knowledge about
- the chemical imbalance theory, antidepressants, the placebo effect of antidepressants
- mental disorders might be the side effects of some medications
- medical conditions that might cause mental disorders
- possible mechanisms behind the seasonal affective disorder
- heritability of mental disorders
- autoimmune diseases, inflammation, infection, and mental disorders
- frailty and mental disorders

Subject knowledge and understanding: By the end of the module the student should be able to
- demonstrate a critical knowledge about various biological causes of mental disorders
- demonstrate a critical understanding of the major concepts and theoretical perspectives on the biological causes of mental disorders
- demonstrate a critical awareness of the key methods and research approaches
- apply insights from research to the understanding and promotion of mental health

Requirements for participation, required level

This seminar is mainly for the master's students enrolling in the Clinical Psychology and Psychotherapy program. It is part of the scientific deepening module of this program.

ERASMUS students interested in taking this seminar MUST be master's students at their home university.

There are no pre-requisite courses.

The seminar will be conducted in English. The students will read journal articles, discuss, present, and write assignments in English.

There will be one seminar session per week. Regular and active participation in group discussions during the seminar is required.

The assessment is based on a presentation during the seminar, the organization of subsequent discussions in the seminars, and a written assignment. Depending on the number of students enrolled in this seminar, the presentation could be a solo or group presentation.
