230833 Englisch: English for Philosophical Discourse, level B1+ and higher (S) (WiSe 2013/2014)

Contents, comment

This is an English for Academic Purposes course, whose main aim is to improve students´ skills in understanding philosophical texts in English, but it should also help to develp their active, and especially their speaking and skills.

Particular attention will be given to DIFFICULTIES students experience in reading difficult texts in English.

Texts will be chosen that are OF INTEREST TO PARTICIPANTS. There will be plenty of room for speaking English, and written mini-assignment will given as is necessary to intensify the learning process.

The course is geared towards students of philosophy and related disciplines as well as other students interested in philosophical terms and questions, which will give the course an interdisciplinary touch.

Requirements for participation, required level

IT IS NOT NECESSARY TO TAKE AN ENGLISH TEST. Language needs assessment will be done in class and the needs of students with different levels of English and different needs and interests will be catered for/integrated as far as possible. Anyone who has done English in German Abitur or equivalent should satisfy the language requirements of the course.

Bibliography

You are advised to make use of an online or printed dictionary of philosophy (in English) of your choice.
