Die sozialen oder kollektiven Gedächtnisse sind in einem enormen Wandel begriffen. War es bisher die „Nation“, die diese Gedächtnisse organisierte, so wird diese Ebene gegenwärtig sowohl von unten wie von oben unterminiert. Auf der einen Seite wird der nationale Rahmen durch die Gedächtnisse von spezifischen Gruppen wie beispielsweise Migranten unterlaufen, auf der anderen Seite sind verstärkt Bemühungen im Gang, transnationale oder kosmopolitische Gedächtnisse zu generieren. Zugleich finden sich in der Soziologie auch verstärkt Analysen von kollektiven Traumata, die eine wichtige Variationsquelle für den strukturellen Aufbau von Gedächtnissen darstellen. Aufbauend auf der Frage, was soziale oder kollektive Gedächtnisse sind, wird sich das Seminar mit diesen Entwicklungen auseinandersetzen.
