Using multimedia and text-based inputs as a basis, this course will offer you the chance to use and improve your English skills: listening, reading and above all speaking about a wide range of stimulating topics related to the use of English in different socio-cultural contexts around the world.
We will discuss material from a variety of countries, including Southern Hemisphere English: Australia, New Zealand, South Africa. Also very different perspectives will be explored: biographical, historical, mythical, fictional.
An important issue is how speakers of English view "their" language today: as a world language, lingua franca, national language, killer language or a variety of different Englishes?
We can only delve into each topic very briefly, so the the choice of material is by necessity highly eclectic. Students are invited to bring in their own interests and experiences, both culturally and linguistically.
