231128 Introduction to English Language Teaching Methodology (weiterf. Schulen) (S) (WiSe 2013/2014)

Contents, comment

This seminar is mainly aimed at those intending to teach at secondary school level (Sek I): Hauptschule, Realschule, Gymnasium or Gesamtschule.

Of the three courses in the profile module this should be taken first, as it functions as an introduction to the module. The other two courses in the module assume knowledge from this course and build upon that knowledge. The course offers an historical survey of methods of teaching English as a foreign language and of major contemporary approaches, emphasising the linguistic and didactic premises underlying the various methods. The course will demonstrate the hybrid nature of much current English language teaching and show how the various methods reviewed have influenced teaching and textbooks to the present day.

Active participation on a regular basis will be expected. There will be no written exam but participants will be required to prepare a presentation or micro-teaching session and/or submit a term paper.
