Encounters, both violent and peaceful, between the British and the Irish look back upon a long history. This course focuses on the 19th and 20th centuries when large numbers of Irish crossed the sea to settle in Britain. We shall investigate the reasons for which they came as well as the reception they met with, accounting for the hostility which often greeted them. This will lead on to the consideration of the strategies the Irish employed to make Britain their home, in spite of these adversities.
