This course considers the many forms of adaptation and appropriation of Shakespeare’s plays, persona, and possessions from the seventeenth century to the present day. Aspects to be discussed include the influence of changing theatre practices, politics, aesthetic tastes, and commercial markets. The class will focus on Shakespeare’s King Lear on page, stage, and screen as an example of Shakespeare’s evolving legacy.
