230558 Linguistic Theory: Semantics (S) (SoSe 2007)

Goals. This seminar is conceived as an introduction to semantics and will review the major areas within this field. Because this class will be based on Saeed's book (see below), the topics dealt with will include not only central ones from semantics such as the nature of (word and sentence) meaning, thematic roles, logical or formal semantics, cognitive semantics, and componential analysis. In addition, it will also look at a number of questions which go beyond straightforward traditional semantics to include aspects often dealt with under pragmatics such as deixis, inference, information structure, background and contextual information, and speech acts.
Work. The work of this class will consist of regular reading in Saeed, of homework assignments, of presentations of selected topics, and of discussion of all of the above.
Reading. Saeed's Semantics will serve as the basic reading for all the participants, and they should have a copy of it. On occasion selected supplementary reading may be assigned. A reserved reading shelf will be provided.
Credit. Students may get credit by making presentations of a particular topic and preparing a written version of their report, or they may do the final exam, or they may make a presentation and write a term paper. What applies to whom obviously varies considerably and is best cleared up in class.
