The 'Glorious Revolution' of 1688, so called because of its happening without any bloodshed, terminated a struggle of over two hundred years' duration about the relative powers of Crown and Parliament. The acceptance of the 'Bill of Rights' by Queen Mary and King William set the seal upon the sovereignty of parliament. The new constitutional framework was embedded in, and helped give shape to, a society less rigidly stratified and more economically dynamic than elsewhere in Europe.
This course will investigate how the new power constellation between Crown and Parliament played out over the 18th century, it will look at the ways in which English society developed within the new constitutional framework, while also casting occasional glances at economic developments.
