Gängige Epochengliederungen der neuen deutschen Literaturgeschichte, beginnen traditionell mit dem Barock, teilen das 18. und 19. Jahrhundert in übersichtliche Abschnitte, um dann spätestens um 1910 mit dem Expressionismus abzubrechen. Für die vielfältige Literatur des 20. Jahrhunderts existiert eine konsensfähige Epocheneinteilung nicht. Dies hat Gründe, denen in der Veranstaltung immer wieder nachgegangen wird. Im Hauptteil der Vorlesung möchte ich den Versuch unternehmen, zumindest einige Gründzüge, Kontinuitäten und Regelmäßigkeiten der Literatur des letzten Jahrhunderts nachzureichen. Der Überblick wird durch die Klärung zentraler Grundbegriffe von der Moderne bis zur Postmoderne ergänzt.
