This course is concerned with the use of literary texts and films in the EFL classroom, with particular emphasis on the opportunities afforded for language learning and above all intercultural learning. We will start by defining the specific goals of using literary texts and films in the EFL classroom as distinct from the native speaker classroom. Then we will develop criteria for the selection of suitable texts within various genres for specific learner groups, based on age, language proficiency, intercultural knowledge, reading experience, life experience and world knowledge, interests and disinterests. We will then examine techniques for working with literature and films in the classroom within an approach based on encouraging collaborative and autonomous learning.
In micro-teaching sessions, students, working in pairs, will be given the opportunity to present their ideas on how to work with specific texts in specific classes. Students will be encouraged to choose their own suitable texts. The idea is to find new texts rather than using texts which are already frequently used in schools.
There is a reserved reading shelf in the library and students should do some browsing before the course starts and come to the first session with some ideas about the goals of using literature and film in the foreign language classroom.
