230262 Lexis (S) (WiSe 2005/2006)

Contents, comment

This is one of the courses in Basic Module Five for students who have done all three courses of BM One.

Class work will fall into two parts. The first will concentrate on some of the ways of analysing the English vocabulary. This part will be based on A Survey of Modern English (for details see below) and will be the subject of a class exam in mid-December 2005.

The second part will consist of student projects in which they will work up the vocabulary of certain lexical fields (e.g. temporal and spatial terms; the climate and weather; school and university). This part is to be based on a novel whose title will be announced on my homepage, so make sure you check there. I would also advise students to read it in the long vacation if they possibly can.

Your final mark will be based on how you do in the December exam and on the quality of your presentation in the second part of class.

Credits: Students can earn three credit points for satisfactory work.
