Science fiction is a popular literary genre which has its commencement in novels such as Mary Shelley's "Frankenstein". Since then, Science Fiction has been used to formulate criticism about current social, political, economic, environmental or scientific developments. Often this criticism comes along as Dystopia - a grim and ominous vision of the future.
This class examines classics of 20th century dystopic Science Fiction. Aldous Huxley's "Brave New World", George Orwell's "Nineteen-Eighty-Four", Philip K. Dick's "Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep?" are some of the texts that are read in class. Furthermore, short stories and filmic examples of dystopic Science Fiction are analyzed as well.
Since there are three novels, some theory texts and a couple of short stories to read, it is a requirement to read at least two of the novels before the semester starts. The novels are read in a chronological order, so it makes sense to start with "Brave New World" and "Nineteen-Eighty-Four".
Please buy:
Aldous Huxley: "Brave New World"
George Orwell: "Nineteen-Eighty-Four"
Philip K. Dick: "Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep?"
All other texts are provided in the reserved book shelf or on the Stud.IP.
