Gegenstand des Seminars ist Spinozas Hauptwerk "Ethik", eines der kühnsten und auch einflussreichsten Bücher der neuzeitlichen Philosophie. Ziel des Seminars ist es, die Hauptlehren dieses Buchs sowohl im Einzelnen verständlich zu machen wie auch ihre argumentative Verknüpfung ans Licht zu bringen.
Eine besondere Schwierigkeit des Buches liegt darin, dass es entgegen seinem Titel auf weite Strecken anscheinend nicht von Ethik redet, sondern von Metaphysik. Eine die Interpretation leitende Frage wird daher sein, was der wirklich ethische Ertrag der Theorie ist.Eine Leistungsbescheinigung (BA-Studiengang) wird ausgestellt für zwei Argumentanalysen.
Ein Leistungsnachweis (Magister- oder Lehramt-Studiengang) wird ausgestellt für eine Hausarbeit.

Magister- und Lehramts-Studiengang: Zwischenprüfung.

Welche Übersetzung sie sich anschaffen, ist den Studierenden überlassen. Wer auch nur ein wenig Latein versteht, dem nützt eine der erhältlichen zweisprachigen Ausgaben.
