"We have learned to discuss the American Dream and to interpret Shakespeare, but if people ask me to direct them to the train station, I am completely at a loss."
It is the aim of the speaking class to mend this frequent complaint of students who are starting to study English. In this class there will be the chance to improve your vocabulary and pronunciation and to choose the appropriate register (style) when speaking English. Much more important, though, is the aim of loosening your tongue and getting you into the habit of speaking in English freely and with confidence. A number of classroom activities dealing with common, everyday situations will challenge you to practice long-buried vocabulary. Part of the focus will be placed on speaking skills in more specialised surroundings, such as discussions and presentations, which you might use in other seminars, as well. Another major topic will be the question of politeness and its impact on your use of the language in the context of an English-speaking country.
Apart from general participation, your grade will be based on at least one presentation and a short interview towards the end of term.
