300023 Multi-Level Governance (S) (SoSe 2007)

Contents, comment

Governance in the more global world of the twenty-first century has become distinctly multi-layered and cross-cutting. Decision-making occurs at - and through interconnections among - municipal, provincial, national, regional and global sites. In addition, classical hierarchical strategies of inter- and intragovernmental governance are complemented by transnational multi-level processes and alternative forms of governance. Such aspects and developments are being summarized in concepts of Multi-Level-Governance (MLG). They provide the opportunity to extend the research perspective to the challenges of more interrelated and complex problems of global policy. In our course we will discuss theoretical and methodological approaches to MLG, as well as analyze their potential with reference to different policy-fields (e.g. environment, development, finance, health).
