Theodor Fontanes Roman "Der Stechlin" zählt zu den Achttausendern der deutschsprachigen Romangeschichte. In diesem Text, dessen Stoff den Autor über Jahrzehnte beschäftigte, gipfelt nicht nur die Fontane’sche Erzählkunst, sondern hier öffnet sich der poetische Realismus auch unverkennbar gegenüber der Moderne – ihren Stoffen, ästhetischen Verfahren und literatursoziologischen Bedingungen. Im Seminar werden wir den Roman intensiv abschnittsweise diskutieren und dabei zahlreiche Kontexte mitbeleuchten: von der Entstehungs-, Rezeptions- und Forschungsgeschichte über stil- und poetikgeschichtliche Zusammenhänge bis hin zu ideen- und sozialhistorischen Problemkonstellationen, die für die Entstehungszeit wesentlich sind.
