300052 Selected Topics in Sociology: Migration and Movies (S) (SoSe 2014)

Contents, comment

Currently we are living in an era of migration. The migration phenomenon also inspired many scholars as well as movies, through which sociological insights can be gleaned. Focusing on a variety of contexts, the course examines the rich and complex tradition of cinematic representations of the migration experience. Refigured as agents of modernity, transnationals, mobile human capital, and sexual objects, we will examine migrants’ and their experiences. The course is structured around the themes of interpersonal relations, inequality, ethnicity, matrimony, sexuality, gender, and religion. In this course students will learn how to assess a movie about migration and mobility with a sociological lens.
