Während sich Politologie und Soziologie überwiegend mit der Verfasstheit politischer Organisation in modernen Staaten beschäftigen, besteht in der Sozial- und Kulturanthopologie (früher auch Ethnologie) eine lange Tradition der Auseinandersetzung mit Autorität und kollektiver Aktion in der ganzen Breite gesellschaftlicher Organisationsformen. Dabei ging es zunächst vor allem um die "Stämme", "Häuptlinge" und "Königsreiche", die die europäischen Kolonialmächte in anderen Teilen der Welt vorfanden und in ihre Verwaltungsstrukturen einzubinden versuchten. Inzwischen hat sich die sozialanthropologische Disziplin jedoch von der strengen Unterscheidung zwischen dem Westen und dem Rest der Welt gelöst und widmet sich Themen wie der indigenen Teilnahme an nationaler und internationaler Politik, den kulturellen Ausformungen demokratischer Prinzipien und Praktiken und der "kulturellen Staatsbürgerschaft" von Migrant:innen in Europa und den USA.
In diesem Seminar werden wir uns mit den theoretischen Grundlagen und aktuellen Themen der Politikethnologie beschäftigen. In unserem Fach liegt die meiste, neuere Literatur nicht in deutscher Sprache vor. Die Bereitschaft, sich durch einige englischsprachige Texte durchzubeißen, ist daher Voraussetzung für die Teilnahme an diesem Seminar.
