International and European political processes, consultations and negotiations have an increasing influence on health-related policies in Germany. This block seminar will introduce students to advocacy as a special field of health communication, using the example of the global “Smoke Free” campaign and international efforts towards tobacco control. On the first day of the seminar lectures will provide the participants with essential background knowledge of EU institutions and the policy making process, as well as EU competences in Public Health. Group work will then enable them to engage in first discussions and prepare for the role play on the second day. Political consultations regarding tobacco control will be simulated in this second part of the seminar, with the students taking over the part of different stakeholders such as the European Commission, anti-smoking activists, the tobacco industry or tobacco framers’ associations. Participants will be able to practice their negotiation skills and learn about the different forces in this policy field. The seminar and role play will be held completely in English
