In den Staaten des antiken Griechenland gab es seit jeher Fremde, teils Freie (Metöken), teils Sklaven. Das römische Reich bemühte sich, die Provinzialen zu integrieren und schenkte vielen Sklaven die Freiheit. Doch auch Griechen und Römer sind in der Fremde, der Peripherie des Mittelmeerraumes zu finden. Im BA-Seminar soll es um die Wahrnehmung von Fremden (Alterität) ebenso gehen wie um Motive, die Fremde aufzusuchen – ökonomische wie politische. Wir wollen einen Bogen schlagen von den Händlern der archaischen Zeit und der Welt Herodots über Auswirkungen des Alexanderzuges zu Fremden in Rom.
