Die Übung steht im engen Zusammenhang mit dem Seminar zur Kultur kleinerer Hansestädte in der Vormoderne (220004). Sie behandelt ähnliche Themen, ist aber nicht eingeschränkt auf Hansestädte; vielmehr sollen hier auch ausgewählte Kleinstädte behandelt werden (das ist schließlich der verbreitetste Städtetyp der Region). Ein Besuch beider Veranstaltungen wäre ideal. Im Zentrum der Übung steht zum einen die Einführung in die neuere Stadt- und Hansegeschichtsforschung. Zum anderen aber wird besonderer Wert gelegt auf den Erwerb praktischer Fertigkeiten im Umgang mit Methoden und Quellen, die zu eigener Forschung auf diesem Feld befähigen. Exkursionen in Archive und Museen der Region gehören zum Veranstaltungsprogramm.
